A ban wave is a mass enforcement event where an anti-cheat system simultaneously bans thousands or tens of thousands of players who were flagged as cheaters. Unlike instant bans (which happen the moment a cheat is detected), ban waves involve collecting evidence over days or weeks and then executing all bans at once.
What is an anti-cheat ban wave?
A ban wave is a mass enforcement event where thousands of flagged accounts are banned simultaneously. Anti-cheat companies use them strategically to delay information about detection methods from reaching cheat developers.
Anti-cheat companies prefer ban waves over instant bans for strategic reasons. Instant bans tell cheat developers exactly when their cheat was detected, allowing them to identify the detection method and patch it quickly. Ban waves delay this information — cheat developers don't know their product was detected until the wave hits, by which time thousands of users have been flagged.
